About Sayulita
Sayulita is a small, bohemian surf village of about 4,000 full-time residents, made up mostly of local Mexicans, Americans, Canadians and Europeans.
From the 1300s to 1521s, the area was inhabited by semi-nomadic Cuyuteco Aztec Indians. During Spanish rule 1521 to 1821, the Spanish administrator built a hacienda and beach home in Sayulita. After the Mexican revolution of 1910, the land was designated communal "ejido" land. In the 1940s, Sayulita was settled by five families who migrated from other areas of Nayarit state to farm and care for the land.

In the first half of the twentieth century the village adhered to a simple lifestyle, following the indigenous ways of the Cora and Huichol Indians. In the 1960s, the word got out among surfers about the consistent wave breaks. As a result, today Sayulita draws surfers and tourists from all over the world to its pristine shores.
